I have been writing for a long time. I was always making stories up as a little girl...even in play time...there was always some grand adventure, task to complete, or home to make. For instance if we were turning my brothers bunk beds into the upper and lower deck of a boat...that was not enough...there were always dangers...sharks or giant squid. Or if I was playing barbies it was rarely just barbies...it was an evil twin and a daring rescue...as barbie dangled from the front porch by a jump rope. And my youngest brother would probably tell you I couldn't even play hotwheels and micro machines like a normal person...it was always the parents and the children and they were always trying to escape something. I always had a story to tell.
I became really inspired to write when our teacher required us to write paragraph for a contest in the 6th grade. We had to write why our family reads the newspaper, as the contest was for the local newspaper. I won 3rd prize and ironically my family never read the newspaper. My article was published in the local newspaper...and seeing those words, that I wrote, in print really gave me a passion for writing things down.
I went on to be editor of my highschool newspaper for 2 years...in which I used as a platform to write about whatever issues were plaguing the highschool hearts at the time. I ruffled many feathers, but as I saw it...I had something to say and I was going to say it.
In college I entered a poetry contest and my poem was selected to be published in a coffee table book and later they asked my permission to read it for a CD. I have often been disappointed that I didn't get a copy of that CD.
Now, I find myself ready to persue writing for wider audiences. The first book I have written is a childrens book. It was sort of a book to wet my whistle...see if I could really do this and how the process worked. I am excited to say that so far I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Now I just need to find time to write the novel I am currently working on.
Having a 9 month old daughter is the most wonderful experience I can imagine, but it does create a lot of challenges for someone who wants to write. Currently, I am very much on her schedule. I am doing my best and I hope the Lord will enable me to continue to write what I feel I need to write. I am looking forward to seeing what the Lord will do through my writing.
